We understand that stress levels can be overwhelming. Whether you’re experiencing a personal matter (health, financial, etc.), trying to understand national political issues like LGBTQ and DACA policy changes, enduring weather related tragedies like Hurricane Irma and Maria, or are inundated by the news of mass shootings. Sometimes we need to be reminded that tough times don’t last forever. We’d like to help you reduce stress during this frustrating and unreasonable time.
Please share this information with your students, parents, teachers, staff and community. We recommend that when events strike, take the time out of your day to talk WITH your students – not just TO your students/ children. Allow them to share their thoughts, frustrations, perhaps even have them share their proposed solutions. If they’re not willing to talk… that’s OK! Give them quite time to write, draw, or perform any other activity that allows them to express themselves. Share with them these tips to help reduce stress.
Top 10 Tips to help Reduce Stress and Maintain your Peace:
Breathe. Literally, close your eyes and take 5 deep, cleansing breaths. Oxygen will fill your lungs and then slowly exhale. Center yourself to your core. Do this a few times a day, especially when you find yourself getting tense.
Talk to Someone. You are not the only one who’s feeling this way. Parents, siblings, cousins, neighbors, teachers, counselors, priest, pastor, anyone who’s willing and able to lend a comforting ear. If the first doesn’t have time, keep looking! Someone will be there for you.
Write it Down. Some of us are more comfortable writing down our thoughts and feelings. Journal your journey. Share them with someone if you’d like.
Listen to Music. Sometimes music allows you to focus, get away, and more importantly, get inspired! Spotify created a DACA playlist, “No Time for Silence” with great artists like Demi Lovato, Daddy Yankee, Khalid, Camila Cabello, Logic and more! Yes, all of these great people are trying to encourage DREAMers by providing personalized messages of support! Create your own playlist to encourage you to get through your personal struggle.
Don’t let Anyone Take Away Your Joy. Dance… sing… laugh… love… hang out with friends… go to the game… and do everything you were doing before. It’s ok to be positive during a very difficult time.
Turn OFF the News. Get involved and be a part of the change. But you shouldn’t have the news on 24/7. It can really add to your stress levels. Notice what kind of information you have on your social media timeline. Edit this so you’re not bombarded by negative news all of the time too.
Exercise. Take a run. Get a group of friends together and workout in your basement. Join an intramural, travel, or school team. Move and feel the many benefits of physical exercise.
Eat Properly. Proper nutrition will help you stay healthy. Some overeat when stressed and others simply don’t like to eat at all when stressed. Maintain balance and get those proteins and veggies in!
Pray or Meditate. If you are a person of faith, then you know the power of prayer. Meditate on good thoughts and believe that with positivity we can accomplish anything together. Read your book of faith and stay connected with a higher power.
Read a Good Book. Take a mental journey with a great book. There’s nothing like getting lost in the pages of one of your favorite books. If you’re feeling inspired, go back to #3 and start writing your own book. Your thoughts, feelings, and experiences will be your legacy. One day you’ll be able to share it with others.
