How to Write a College Essay About Yourself
A college essay shows another side of your personality that is more than grades, books, work, and numbers. The best college essays are memorable stories that express emotion, gratitude, perseverance, strength of character, and honesty. But where are you supposed to start? We’ll explore how to write a college essay about yourself and the importance of working with professionals who can help you garner success.
When college admission counselors review your work, they want to know that you can truly write a college essay about yourself. They want to learn more about you and get to know you better.
We recommend starting with free form thoughts. What are you passionate about and can easily discuss with anyone at any time? Jot these down and then put your paper away. Come back the next day and see what jumps out at you. Do you have more to add? Or are you ready to pick a topic based on your notes.
Now that you’ve picked a topic, write down the first thing that comes to your mind. Go with it and write a draft. If more than one idea comes to mind pick which one you feel best about. Read the draft out loud to a trusted friend or relative, and get their honest opinion. Do not take offense when someone critiques your work – especially if they are a strong advocate in your college career success.
Storytelling is one of our oldest arts as a society. A well-written essay shows character and why you’d be a great addition to their student body. Try to find example essays but don’t copy them. Just get a good idea of a natural sounding writing style that communicates maturity as well as answers the prompt. Creativity is much appreciated, so highlight unique parts of your life that someone wouldn’t be able to know about just looking at your transcript.
Do not try to write a college essay the day before it’s due. This will require a bit of planning and maturity on your part. Enjoy the process and be proud of your work.
A great college essay helps admissions people to get to know you better, and makes them excited about meeting the face behind the essay.

Top 5 Summer Activities for Youthto Keep the Brain Active During Summer Vacation
It’s barely been a few weeks since the school bell rang, dismissing students from school and welcoming them to summer vacation. Before long, it’ll be Labor Day weekend! But until then, CoolSpeak is offering you the Top 5 Summer activities for youth to keep your brain active during summer vacation.
Naturally, students of all ages will begin their summer plans and dreams, meanwhile forgetting anything and everything that is school related. According to Emily Patterson from Primrose Schools, children can lose up to 60 percent of their learning from the previous school year during their summer break. In order to prevent this from happening, it is critical to keep the brain active and the imagination alive.
At CoolSpeak, we strive to put the motivation back into education. We are here to make learning fun and suggest summer activities for youth that can keep your brain sharp and be far better than video games, television, and sitting around.
Top 5 Summer Activities for Youth
- Write Something Everyday
Writing for a school assignment can be a tedious and difficult challenge for some, but have you ever tried writing for fun? Mashable has found that writing can improve your memory along with other skills, such as creativity and coordination. You could keep a journal or write a story. No matter what it is, write something, even if it is only a few words.
- Do a Daily Math Problem
When you do math, your brain has to analyze and solve the problem. Even one math problem can stretch your mind to problem solve and improve your critical thinking skills. There are countless places to go to find math problems, such as Math Buddy. This website even has a question of the day, where you can go and do a daily math problem. You could even get the app found on Google Play or the App Store.
- Read Everyday
Reading is a great way to keep your mind and imagination active. When you are reading, you have to look at words, remember vocabulary, and make connections between your imagination and the plot of the book. There is no limit to what, when, or how much you read. Stay tuned… in an upcoming blog, we’ll explore “Where the Sidewalk Ends” and its correlation to Johnny Cash with Joaquin Zihuatanejo!
- Create Something
Whether you paint or draw a picture, cook, bake, or write a song, you are visualizing an idea and using your imagination to think of ways to make it happen. This way, you are keeping your brain active and you’re also making something that you can enjoy! Plus, it teaches you the importance of how “practice makes perfect.”
- Keep Physically Active
Not only should you focus on keeping your brain active, but you should also make sure you keep your body active during the summer. Exercising keeps your body healthy, revives the mind, and improves your mood by releasing endorphins, or “feel-good” chemicals. You could consider riding a bike, running, walking, swimming, or even dancing. Remember, healthy body + healthy mind = happy life.
Many of our student-athletes are already involved in summer sports and activities, so remember to also rest, hydrate, and maintain proper nutrition habits.
These summer activities for youth can be easy and fun to keep your brain active while you are out of school. The key is to stay motivated and challenge yourself. Just thinking of things to do is an exercise for your brain in itself!
