Just in time for the SuperBowl, a new short film / commercial was posted by Gillette entitled “We Believe: The Best Men Can Be.” It addresses the topic of Toxic Masculinity and focuses on Bullying and Harassment, asking the question “Is this the best a man can get?”
This film challenges men to do more, to get closer to being the best; to say the right thing, and to act the right way. However, unlike most commercials which focus on increasing product sales, Gillette chose to take part in social advocacy especially as it relates to their brand identity and promise.
A new commercial by Gillette is a great way to start the conversation about some of our behaviors and that is what our CoolSpeak programming efforts focus on. CoolSpeak enables all participants to talk about their thoughts, feelings, experiences, and behaviors. It is important that we all do some reflection because some old habits are hard to break, but they need to be broken.
At times, it’s hard to reflect on some of our masculine behaviors, but this is the time to do so. The #MeToo movement has helped shed some light on a problem that CoolSpeak tries to address in some of our programming efforts.
Let’s Work Together to Make the World a Better Place
We do not believe that every male is a perpetrator of toxic masculinity; however, many of our CoolSpeak team members are parents and take this topic to heart because we are trying to create a World that is fair, equal, and just for all human beings.
CoolSpeak facilitators often use resources such as this Gillette commercial to spark conversations and allow participants to reflect on their thoughts and behaviors. These videos are great conversation starters that allow us to address challenging topics that most times don’t fit into regular day school teaching.
We suggest to use videos like this, to spark open-ended conversation in your classrooms and at home. While we’re not here to judge, we do recommend listening more than speaking. Encourage students to respect each other’s responses, learn from their experiences, and challenge students, parents, and teachers to do better.
If you would like a CoolSpeak Speaker or Program at your school on the topics of toxic masculinity, bullying, harassment, relationships, violence, and more, please reach out and talk with us. The Speakers that talk about these topics include April, Zach, Joey, Carlos and Ernesto. We look forward to helping your school implement a program that will encourage long-lasting results.
